Thunder Cycles™

At the October 2003 Hot Wheels Newsletter Collector's Convention, Mattel debuted their new Thunder Cycles. They were made to be able to be raced on the track. In November, the Thunder Cycles Duel race set could be found on the retail shelves. We were eager to try them out!

(please note that this page is not finalized but you can peek anyway)

As you can see, we wanted a longer track so we added some Race Grooves Dual Lane Track!

Below, you will find some cool videos that we took as soon as we bought the set. My son Jeremy is almost 8 years old here and my daughter is 10 1/2. She makes sure I don't forget the 1/2 LOL!

Users with high speed internet access can click on the link to view the video. Windows users with dial-up access should right-click the link and "save target as" a file on your computer. Sorry about the big file size of the second and third videos but they are very amusing...

Start Gate video 01 (445KB)
Very cool starting mechanism! You can see how the green piece rocks down the backside of the start gate. From the perspective of the racers, it is a very good simulation of the green lights on drag racing "christmas trees". When the green gets to the bottom, you can gun your pedal and the race is on!
Start Gate video 02 (2,998KB)
Unfortunately, the start gate doesn't always work as witnessed by this video. Even his sister had to come and see if she could get it to work. I think that there is a safey device that won't allow the start to trigger unless the device is perfectly flat. Mattel uses a similar system in thier Launcher packs.

When I need a laugh, I watch this video. The facial gesture that my son makes at the very end is priceless!
Finish Line video 04 (512KB)
Another cool innovation! A rocking flag that signifies the winner. (front view)
